Enrichment Courses
Spanish
Spanish lessons are provided beginning in First Grade. The Spanish curriculum is an extension of our whole language, hands-on approach to learning. The goal of the Spanish program is to introduce young learners to the language in order to better equip them as they continue their studies in later years. Students also acquire a basic understanding and appreciation of the diversity of cultures in the Spanish-speaking world.
Music
All students have music once per week. Our skills-based music instruction includes: singing, dancing, steady beat activities, movement, tonal and rhythm patterns, instruments, music appreciation, and listening activities. Educators repeatedly find that success in music fosters success in other areas of learning. Our goal is to provide a music program that is creative, intellectually enriching and joyful. Children in grades 3 – 4 learn to play the records, while students in grade 5-6 learn hand chimes as well as guitars. All children participate in a Christmas musical program and chapel services throughout the year.
Library
Our school library has two main purposes: support the curriculum and instill an enjoyment of reading in our students. The librarian teaches the students research skills and how to use the library. We also have the Accelerated Reader Program (ARP) that motivates our students to read and gives diagnostic reports to teachers about each student’s reading progress.
Computers/Technology Education:
The primary purpose of our computer learning program is to prepare our students for the continuation of their education technologically and to meet the criterion for computer education as proscribed by the California Board of Education. There is a strong emphasis is on keyboarding skills and utilizing computer technology as a learning tool. Students learn to use the Internet safely and to understand the basics of various computer applications. Use of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation programs builds skills for current and future academic success. The program integrates classroom curriculum into lessons and lays the foundation for the skills students need as they progress into middle and high school. Specific additional challenges are often available, providing access to advanced computer processes. We’re learning by doing and having fun along the way!
Art Instruction
KinderPrep through Fifth grade students receive art instruction every other week by a credentialed art teacher. The curriculum used is SPECTRA, which meets the state education standards for art in the elementary school. The lessons integrate aesthetic perception, and individual creativity, along with the development of skillful production, and the understanding of our cultural art heritage. The lessons include art appreciation, art history, and hands-on assignments using a wide variety of art media.
Physical Education
Physical Education allows the students to develop a competency in a wide variety of physical skills. This class promotes physical development and achievement of personal physical fitness goals. An example would be the President’s Challenge. The children develop safety skills, personal values, moral development and cooperative attitudes. The American Heart Association’s Jump for Heart fund-raiser continues to be an annual event and all Bethel students are encouraged to participate. Bethel also hosts the Bethel Lutheran Track Meet at Cupertino High School, which involves many schools from the area.
